Garden Water Feature Installation

Water blades, spillways, bubbling stones and fountains that add sound and movement without a full pond.

Moving water adds sound, light and a focal point, and can mask road noise in a busy area. Not every garden has room for a pond, and not every household wants open water. A water feature delivers much of the effect with a smaller footprint and simpler care.

One Stop Build & Landscaping builds water features into patios, walls, borders and seating areas, designed alongside the surrounding paving or decking.

Types of water feature

  • Water blades and spillways built into walls or raised beds
  • Bubbling stones, spheres and urns over hidden reservoirs
  • Wall-mounted features for small courtyards
  • Fountains within existing or new ponds
  • Rill channels running alongside paths or patios

Pond or water feature?

A self-contained feature recirculates water from an underground reservoir covered by stones or grating, so there is no exposed depth. That makes it a better fit for young families and small spaces. A pond supports plants and wildlife but needs more space and care.

How a water feature is built

  • Choose position, style and how the water will sound
  • Excavate and set the reservoir or build the structure
  • Install pump, pipework and outdoor electrics through a qualified electrician
  • Fit the feature, test flow and adjust splash
  • Finish surrounding stone, paving or planting

Cost, care and electrics

Cost depends on the feature type, size, materials, reservoir, lighting and electrical connection. Features need occasional topping up due to evaporation, periodic pump cleaning and algae control. Outdoor electrics must be RCD protected and installed in line with Building Regulations Part P.

Water Features questions

Is a water feature safer than a pond for children?

Self-contained features with a covered reservoir have no exposed depth, so they are generally a safer choice where young children are present. Adult supervision near any water is still sensible.

Do water features need electricity?

Most need power for a pump, and lighting is optional. A qualified electrician installs a safe outdoor supply with RCD protection. Some small solar features exist but are less powerful.

How noisy is a water feature?

Sound depends on flow rate and drop height. A gentle bubble is quiet; a spillway or blade is more noticeable. Flow can usually be adjusted to suit you.

Can a water feature be built into a patio or wall?

Yes. Blades and spillways can be set into walls or raised beds, and bubbling features can sit within paving. Planning them with the patio gives the cleanest finish.

How often do I top up the water?

Evaporation and splash mean regular topping up in warm weather. Rainwater is preferable where available.

How do I stop algae?

Shade, regular cleaning and suitable treatments help. Removing debris and keeping the pump clean also reduce algae growth.

Can I have lighting in my water feature?

Yes. Underwater or spotlights add drama in the evening. Lighting is installed with the pump supply by a qualified electrician.

What happens in winter?

Many features are switched off and drained in freezing weather to protect pumps and pipework. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for your pump.

What affects the cost?

Feature type and size, materials, reservoir, structural work, lighting, and the distance to a power supply.

What should I send for a quote?

Photos of the area, your postcode, ideas or images of features you like, and the location of the nearest power supply.
