Garden Pond Construction

Wildlife, ornamental, fish and formal raised ponds, sited and built with edging and surrounding landscaping.

A pond brings movement, reflection and wildlife into a garden. It also involves water, weight, electricity and safety, so siting and construction decisions made at the start shape how well it works for years.

One Stop Build & Landscaping builds ponds for gardens around Edenbridge and across the wider area, together with the paving, decking or planting around them, so the pond feels part of the garden rather than dropped into it.

What kind of pond?

TypePurposeKey considerations
Wildlife pondFrogs, insects, birds and native plantsShallow sloping edges, no fish, minimal equipment
Ornamental pondPlanting and a focal pointShelves for marginal plants, optional fountain
Fish pondGoldfish or koiGreater depth, filtration and pumping sized to the volume
Formal or raised pondArchitectural, often near the houseBlock or brick walls, coping, built-in features

Siting the pond

Partial sun suits most ponds; full shade limits plants and deep shade under trees adds leaves and debris. Consider underground services, viewing points from the house, access for maintenance and, for fish ponds, power supply routes. Ponds built near buildings or boundaries need careful excavation and structural thought.

Construction stages

  • Mark out shape and depth zones, including planting shelves
  • Excavate and remove spoil, checking levels all round
  • Build walls for raised or formal ponds
  • Lay protective underlay and a flexible liner, or other agreed construction
  • Install pump, filter and pipework where included
  • Finish edges with stone, paving, sleepers or planting, then fill

Equipment and electrics

Fish ponds need filtration sized to the volume and stocking level, often with a UV clarifier. Pumps, lighting and fountains need a safe outdoor electrical supply protected by an RCD and installed by a qualified electrician in line with Building Regulations Part P.

Safety, cost and aftercare

Open water is a drowning risk for young children. If children live in or visit the home, consider a rigid safety grille, a raised design, or a self-contained water feature instead. Cost depends on size, depth, construction type, equipment, edging and access for excavation and spoil removal. Seasonal care includes removing leaves, cleaning filters and topping up in dry weather.

Pond Construction questions

Where is the best place for a garden pond?

A spot with some sunlight, away from overhanging trees, visible from the house and with access for maintenance. Avoid known service runs. Rob will look at your garden and suggest positions.

How deep should a pond be?

It depends on purpose. Wildlife ponds can be shallow with sloping edges. Fish ponds need greater depth to protect fish from temperature swings and predators; koi need considerably more. Depth is agreed during planning.

Do I need a pump and filter?

Wildlife ponds often do not. Fish ponds need filtration sized to the volume and fish load. Fountains and waterfalls need a pump. Rob will explain what your pond requires.

What liner do you use?

Flexible liners laid over protective underlay are common because they suit any shape. Formal raised ponds may use block walls with a liner or other waterproof systems. The construction method is agreed for each project.

Is a pond safe with young children?

Open water is a drowning risk for young children. Rigid grilles, raised walls or choosing a self-contained water feature instead are safer options. Discuss your household with Rob at the design stage.

Can you build a raised or formal pond?

Yes. Raised ponds use block or brick walls finished with render, cladding or coping and suit patios and contemporary gardens.

Can you renovate or rebuild an old pond?

Often. Leaking liners, collapsed edges or overgrown ponds can be repaired or rebuilt. The condition is assessed before quoting.

What happens to the excavated soil?

Spoil can be removed from site, or used to create raised beds or level changes elsewhere. Spoil removal is included in the quotation if required.

How do I maintain a pond?

Remove fallen leaves in autumn, trim plants, clean filters as recommended, and top up during dry spells, preferably with rainwater. Avoid overfeeding fish.

What do you need for a pond quote?

Photos of the area, approximate size, your postcode, the type of pond you want, any equipment ideas and access details for excavation.
