Hard Landscaping in Edenbridge

Walls, steps, terraces, paving and built features that give a garden its structure.

Hard landscaping is the built framework of a garden: the walls, steps, paving, edges and structures that stay in place year-round. Get it right and planting has a setting to grow into; get it wrong and a garden can feel awkward to use however good the plants are.

Because One Stop Build & Landscaping carries out building work as well as landscaping, walls, terraces and paving can be designed and built by the same team, around Edenbridge and the surrounding towns.

What hard landscaping includes

  • Patios and terraces, including split levels
  • Brick, block and stone garden walls
  • Steps, ramps and retaining structures
  • Paths, edging and gravel areas
  • Built-in seating, fire pit areas and planters
  • Bases for sheds, summer houses and garden rooms

Planning a garden around levels

Many gardens in the Weald slope. Terracing turns a slope into usable flat areas joined by steps. Taller retaining walls need proper design for the soil they hold back, and drainage behind them so water pressure does not build up.

Combining hard and soft landscaping

Built elements are usually completed first, followed by planting, turf and finishing. Planning both at the outset means beds, irrigation routes and lighting cables can be allowed for before paving goes down.

Cost and timing

Price depends on the size and complexity of the design, materials, levels, access for machinery and the amount of spoil to remove. Larger gardens can be completed in phases. Rob can quote from a site visit and your ideas or sketches.

Hard Landscaping questions

What is the difference between hard and soft landscaping?

Hard landscaping is the built parts of a garden: paving, walls, steps and structures. Soft landscaping covers living elements such as turf, plants, shrubs and trees.

Do you design gardens as well as build them?

Rob can help develop a practical layout from your ideas, photos or inspiration images. If you already have a design from a garden designer, it can be built from those plans.

Can a sloping garden be made usable?

Yes. Terraces, steps and retaining walls can turn a slope into level areas for seating, lawn and planting.

Do garden walls need planning permission?

Walls up to 1 metre beside a road, or 2 metres elsewhere, are generally permitted development, with exceptions for listed buildings and conservation areas. Check with your council if unsure.

Can you build a fire pit area?

Yes. Built-in fire pits are set on non-combustible bases and positioned sensibly away from fences, buildings and overhanging trees.

Can the work be done in phases?

Yes. Larger gardens are often split into phases, with groundwork and drainage planned so later stages are not compromised.

How is drainage handled?

Paving is laid to falls, and drainage channels, soakaways or permeable surfaces are added where water would otherwise collect.

What machinery do you use?

Mini diggers and dumpers are used where access allows, which speeds up excavation. Narrow access may mean more work by hand.

Can you include garden lighting?

Cable routes and fittings can be planned into the build. Electrical connections are completed by a qualified electrician.

How do I get a quote?

Send photos, rough measurements, your ideas and postcode through the form. Rob will usually arrange a site visit for larger gardens.
